Hallo and welcome to the eleventhepisode of Naked Truth with Carmon and Olivia. I hope you are all well. Howare you doing Carman? What have you been up to do that? NTHAT's, a litl becol. I found it really a struggle to go from summer to alter despiteify thylove, Autumnis being busy with my kids, start secondary school and preparingher for that and been doing a lot of personaldevelopments, because Tyou need to be a few steps up front from your client. So,as you culd have, and yes idealyn. What about you? Yeah? It's Um! It's funny! You mentionethe weather, 'cause youll sat there all wrapped up and I'm sat here in a vent. That's cause. My house is so hot. Weare having the annual argument overheating and whether there's an annual argument over what temperature to have the house at'cause. I think just leave it like at the most at the acsolete lice twentytwo degrees, but he likes to Wack I onto fold 'cause. Apparently I its hoter faster. It doesn't it's not have tems that works, but we have this argevery year. I struggle with people who wants to be in t shirts at home, InweaIsta Jampe now in avest in it's October. I want to be wrapped up in a blanket infront of NIR, not tatly eating on Yeah I've been pretty busy. I knowwe've not recorded for a while, although we have caught up regularlybut yeah. It's been been a lot of changes. I think, sincethe last time we recorded like personally and around the world and itsoms all insane and crazy- again, isn't it andwe don't know I mean I mean as weare recording I don't even know if DonaldTrump's in hospital anymore or not, I don't know he was out there doing aparade whilst he's thick, avery connad. So what's oking on to be honesty.Months ago, before summer, I made a conscious decision to know what media Iwold year, him every prob three days so or sometimes once a week just to knowwhich new rules I have to a and my life is so much better. I just Don I'm notinterested in all these big DS stories and you don't even know if it Yel so t yeah this that this particular storyO it trump has just gotten me fascinated II'm just. I can't believe what we're seeing. I Ijust can't from like staged vhotos to a sick, eldly, overweight man, doing a parade in a car, our Lik, I'm not eventhinking about your health. I'm thinking about the health of the peoplewho ee Oer you to drive us am Hon. I don't know for me. I look at him. Likehe's doing a t V show I think his...

Aravia is like I am doing my TV showand I think he's degrading the the seat he's sitting on the leader of Marca, sosopainful I combet to watching I jusc. I I do wonder like Butif he's. Ok, not does he realizethis isn't perfectly normal beavior Olivia Hes, now mentally he eats noOkaro Haviin tat. No because I think he Awi h himselfwith people I mean I didn't watch the debate on TV by youon the news. You saw hing withou mask making fun of the other guy. The oearthmask her, and you see his daughter, Ivanka being like a barbied doll withvery serious face in a very arm and sitting down sitting down kind of look, and then you saw the the sun as well. So for me, it's Li. I just can for me.I The laws of the LOW ACAAC C com. Well E. I suppose this isn't a a political, podcast. N Now thing I don't know anything about politics, theyr, sweet! We are going to discussand I suppose there's there's a bit of politics attached to it the future atwork. So, as we all know, the Coronaf Iris pandemic is affecting everythingabout the way we live and how we work and the workplace and what employersare meant to be doing is confusing and Yo K. Ow, go back to the office, don'tgo back to the office work promotely, don't wor remotele workromately again, it's all very confusing, and also what we see in the major isvery scary. You know we're expecting long term effects on the economy fromthe pandemic, an when it comes to business e, so some businesses maycease trading and only yesterday sinner world and ouce. They were closing theirtest. INEMD EEN know, though no so that's another. You kN W another onebites the dust for another kind of big company and others have had to adapttheir practices and using more remote workers if they can and worker behaviorcould be. You know permanently shifting over time, and this impacts theworkforce. When you watch the news it does feel like all jobs are at risk. You feel down, you, don't really want to go sit in your tiny home, offficeand stare t at laptop and a lot of people are experiencing mental healthchallenges due to the changes and the uncertainty t experiencing Ou knowincluding anxiety and epression and Carmon, as you know, Inbi the fixer. Soplease tell me: How do we fix this? Oh dear, first of all, I stop watching thenews. Olivia mody listening an stop watching the news so yeah. If it's likethe new world, is one of constant...

...change and and disruption, and so theold model of working that to be honest, tinging corporate for twenty five years. It didn't work well for many of US Maito plenty of stress and Cietyandhappy people thes motil have to go and we must reshape any model base onhow we humans we operate and will make u thrive. So companies need to do morethanjest, focusing on safety. That right now is the right thing to do,because it's the most concerning Ando to deal with, but they need to payattention to the human capital, as well as to all these advanced tenologies, and it could very well be starting with giving people the tools they need tosupport, t nature, their onwell being and mental vecilians. So they canoperate from a place of strength to navigate the change in their daily lifethat it will be here for many months to come. So the meantimes of crisis, like thecurrent, want the most most important resource is our inervosilians and hehas to be the pet rock on which to Bild andisoon calld, the new nomal, not justat work at home as well, so it is from a starts thing. It's really importantto understand how we work as humans, and we have to take personalresponsibility individually to do I for ourselves, but what F companies theyhave to to do n their parts as well yeah. The biggest issue is this iscompletely unprecedented. We've not dealt with a global issue like this coved pandanicbefore so we're all learning together and we weren't prepared as humans allemployers to deal with this kind of threat and when way a face would perceive threatsthe higher functioning parts of our brains, just stop working. We've revertto our primitive brain systems and go into that fight or flight mode. Wecan't operate properly and we struggle to be creative. We can't be empatheticinclusive, open to new ideas, sea alternative perspectives when we'restruggling to see pass the next hour. So real inspiration, breakthroughs andthat kind of deep sustain focus can only happen when you'll rechargedandengaged, and that's why the creative, rather th reactive parts of our minescan comfort the surface. So we really need to be kind toourselves if we're struggling with resilience and creativity at the moment,it's a difficult time to be resillian and creative, and when it comes to businesses, historically, companies haven't been great at deaming, with the emotionalneeds of the workforce. Cashes King Employees, a e, a costcode. So foryears, companies have been streamlining their work forces for efficiency ratherthan for resilience. So what could we...

...do to improve things and be betterprepared for our emotional needs at work? Yeahndfor me, this ISK emotional needs,so it's all about improving our mental resilients in our mental fitness, andwe talk about mental mecilions. We talk about the capacity too, to do threethings realy to bounceback from avacity to adapt change and to keep going on.Whatever you see in front of o'll keep thei hope and the faith that at somepoint you life is going to be better, so keep walking because to be creative and D to beproductive in Uncertaintin CAES. We need to develop this mental fitness. The mental fitness for me is first, we need to increase ourself awareness, what our fears, our limiting telieves, all these old habits that are noworking for us, because we keep behavin the same way and getting the same oldresults that make us unhappy thats. The first thing, a w welee to takeresponsibility for that individually. Then the other thing is. We need toAsse adversit in failers as opportunities wor growth, rather thanyou know, being scared about it Um, you know, look at it like okay, what is mylarning here? What is this telling me? I remember I spent so many des I westedso much precious moments so many years you know like M, noaccepting this adversity, since it is sorry for myself and Um, you knowfeeling like a victame. Why me well? Why? U is because the majority of caarcases adversity will come just to give you a kick APYURA. Basically, because you know in my case I spent so many years and Hav been doing somethingthat it was not my path they ti. I didn't have adversity one after another.I will stay there forever. So in a way, if you believe in the gods or let me ifyou dog and you believe, more in a universe and a higher power for me, Ilook at it as the universe is giving me that push. I need, because if, if Idon't get that my life is not going to change and the fird one is we need to to focus on action, what can we do?They Sing our control to improve our situation, and one thing with this isacceptyou. Reality don't fight, because every time you fight reality, you willlose Hedrson Reality S. would you see in front of you, but then you startthinking about what can I do in my control to Mae my situation better andthe moment we start thinking about action and we start acting on that. We Sop the fears we stoff, the you know, you just focus on action and you kept improving and bringing puing, and theother thing as well for me is...

...the biggest lie in history. For me isthat we feel we are in control. We were never in control, W will never be incontrol and now, of course, the more we watch the news we lessin control. Wefeel base totally okay, because we are no mean to Bei control. I life is incontrol of us. You know you could be leaving your house to go to work andyou coul have a car accident that you don't know it's going to happen yet themajority of my days I spent t en feeling like I was controlling my life.So this is a big lie and the problem with the lies now that we feel sonowing control. It give us more stress because in you, Hetis by Shol be incontrol. If you have in your head well, I'm nowin control and I shouldn't main control in my total sense. Then you startfocusing in things and you'd start getting a little bit less stress. Sofor me to thrive in life, we need to avoid making decisions from a place offear in a place of panicky, because the qualities like focus, empathy, collaboration, inclusion at Isensal to wing in the future and, as youmentioned, to be creative during ancercity ind chaos, our immediateymotion, it need to be met fast. We can't create an implementnew solutionsfor the future if we struggling to simply get through the day, and that iswhat is happening right now. We all have this amazing treasuresinside us. You know amazing insights, original ideas. I need o movie solution to previouslyunsolveal problems, but those treasures and those traces are the buildingblocks of productivity, but we can't tap into them if we feel ancious orstress as most as people are, I know so me, wroter opposilly, linking is aboutself care, and south care is no selfich. Again I spend many years carrying aboutmy partner, my daughter, ND, my friends, my work and forgetting about me sosouth care. It should be tolk priority for all of us, it's like if you're inan airoplane, they always sai to you, put your oxygen mask before you canhelp anybody else right. So exactly the same, that is what I mean by Selfcareso individually. We have to put ourselvcare top priority and then in incompanies they have to play a big role in this to make it sure inpre wervingis at top of the agenda. Yeathis um few things we can do there and you know it's great to have this fullyoptimized workfor system, but if the...

...humans that are turning up to work, aren't optimized themselves and they're, not bringing their home cales to work, how much of ther kind of wisdom and empathy and create creativity orshowing up with them, and if the answer is not a lot, how do we change that?Well, let's have a look at what human epoct, what makes humans operate attheir best, whether they're working from home or going into the office, so some key things that can help us bemore productive and creative at work ar well number one when we're not uncall.Twenty four seven and that that's something I certainly recognizedin my last corporate role, was that feeling of you always had to reply to emails. Whenyou got them always had to answer the failure. I always had to respond asquickly as possible, and it was a story I was telling myself. It wasn'tnecessary that anybody else was telling me you have to apply to that personwithin fifteen minutes, orise they're going ta wonder what you're doing or oranything like that it was all in my own head thinking in a Hulf of nine atnight, O perfectly reasonall time, the othersed working on my workphone and and that doesn't help with creativity. It's just putting more and more pressure on yourself and again, just beingreactivelyactiveyactive, it isn't being creative. Another thing we can do is make surewe're saying goodbye to IU work day at a normal time and get some good sleepso whatever that is for you, whatever works best for you and your family work, the hours you intend to work andthat's it. Okay there'll, always be something that might come up at somepoint during the year. Where you have to do some extra hours, but thatshouldn't be the norm, you know the norm should be you do your hours andyou finish, and you get a good rest and then, during your working day, you haveto be taking regular breaks. You need to give your mind arrest from whatevertask is at hand, go and do something else. Go, have a walk round the gardenan go for a make yourself, a coffee just get away from the screen for alittle bit something else. We really need to makesure we're doing particularly one wa in these kind of ever changing block down, not lock down, don't really know what we're doing measures is make sure weare connecting meaningfuly with friends and family and that again means finilgout what works for you. Is it a phone call? Is it video call? Is it asocially distance meetup? What what is it that works for you? How do you bestconnect with people wee also able to be more productive andcreative when we don't feel that we're having to choose between our job andhappiness? And I know that can be easier said than done, and sometimes wehave jobs that don't necessarily make us happy, but my recommendation there is to...

...view the job as a job and andexperience your anhappiness outside of that or, if you are lucky enough, really dofind yourself a job and create yourself a job where you are happy so that you're not feeling thisconstant kind of tug between I have to go to work, and I have to do this oryou know I'd much rather be doing that and be happy. I hate my job and we need to find those maments whereWEU can pause and think and explore our our ownpassions and experience real joy.So maybe that's something you find in the workplace and maybe it's somethingyou find it completely detached from the workplace. Maybe it's a hobbywhatever it is make sure you are having those moments to enjoy life and andthink about things and reflect. And another thing that's reallyimportant is we need to feel that we matter so weneed to feel valued both at home and in the workplace. We need to feel like weare visible, that people see us and they appreciate us, and part of that you may feel is wellthat's on other people to show you, but it's also one you to recognize in howpeople are showing you that you are valued and you are appreciated, so youmight think, like Oh wellmy partner, never says to me that M that never SAS.Thank you and I, when I've done something for them. But what do theyshow Yo? What what is another way that they might be showing you that or havethat open conversation with them tell them. I need you to be moredemonstrative in in the way that you demonstrate your your love. For me, anI I god to Pint Olivia, because sorry to interrupt Um a thing. It's really important that wetake on a ship witthis at least three primary emotionallyits. We have to bevisible to Mutchento value. People can only do that to us if westart to do anoffus to our resolves, and then we showed the way towarsolders how we like to be treatered. The majority of times like in my case in mylife sperience, I didn't see me visible. I didn't see me, you know I didn'tDoriv much in my life, everybody else mut more than me, and I truly didn'tvalue myself. I was in the Bostom prior at Yor value, everybody else. So it'simpossible. We don't do it first to ourselves the sad now it's impossiblethat we will get in much from other people. So let's take on a ship and doit for ourselves and in as Wad Aso really so sometimes people there arefive languages of Love, love, Manin relationships and a relationship. Weneed to be honest with people, you know. If I'm with a partner and my lovelanguage is wards and for my partner I is giving presents e's not goine, towork really well between us. But if I tell him, look sof the diamonds andtell me I love it. I love you every now...

...and then thing of push. If they don'tdo it, you can react to it, but at least they know it right. So yeah, really good point and ace t come uck to you point about valuing yourselfactually saw something on twitter this morning that I really liked- and Iprobably not going to remember it exactly correctly, but it was thatsomeone's and Dad said to them. You believed in Santa Clause for eightyears, but you can't believe in yourself for thirty minutes and itreally made them stop on my guard- and I was like hard at such a powerfule Ooi, I'm stealing that so'me God IV got touse it on this popcas 'cause great. But the thing is we having larnthese skills because our parnts was all about. Okay, you need to survive, so wegive you thes skills and then bekind be nice, be genorously babyb. When and weforget, because we thing I mean from me- coming from the Cathli bycground Lik,Nonoi, Ollibo, sharing wekind and this and that- and we forget to tell ourkids be kind to yourself asyeah. I love yourself bus because once we learn howto Loke ourselves and for me still like a journey thenhe's, so easy to laughwith the people because he doesn't love his abandoned, it doesn't mean that, because we love ourselves, we we we don't have the space or then to love.Others OAMINNO. It's like you, love yourself. So it's easy for you to loveOll this. In the same way, O yeah anyway, we debiate a little bit bynomes atonhav, revebuto business, yeah, so yeah m. If we think about from acampany point of view, and because we were talking about the future at work,so in my view, campan's upproach has to be in placentric if they want to besuccessful in future. So Fo, yes, an me being in corporate for so many years. We have used to knowledge to replace humans and drive cost savings, buttenology doesn't work on his own. Companies still need humans to make itwork. So why no USEDTER knowledgy to helpuss improve mental hitness in place, satisfaction and weling Ou seuld to help us change our habits and behavior. So we can operate at our full potential, so it could be that there is optionsfor companies to to create a DASHBORT for management, to measure the mentalreciliens and emotional wellbeing of the employees. So they can identify andaddress the factors leading to ban out and distrust in the workplace, and thisis impacting in many business metrics. So it will be a really good thing forthe business to do so. We will improve the company's performance with anengaged motivated workforce and, if US...

...correctly, ten knowlede, you can helpus to have a better work. Life balence through remote working could be that wegiving the employs wellbein tools like an employer system program and Outo, made the more manual tasks, so they can get on with more creative ones. So, forme overall as summery here, the company is only as rusiliant as his people. Ifemplas that anxious, reacive and burn out, every basiss magic will beaffected and that's why people need to be at the center of whatever reentryplans or the util transformation was strategies. Companies are formulatingright now during these challenging times for the future yeahnd. We need to reimagine andrebuild the relationship between employees and companies and at heart ithas to be about helping employees rebuild erelationship with themselves. Humans are human and O tosand. A twenty hasbeen a tough year. Companies need to create conditions for people to operate, for a pace of strength and calm and empathy somewhere they can be curious and somewhere. You know they grow intheir resiliens. A candemicas pushed us too change the work environment at aquicker pace than anticipated. I mean the speed t which some companies which, let's face ha've been resisting homeworking for years, have been ableto switch to remote working was phenomenal, I'm not going to name, henames there, but I you know, I do know companies that have been so against himeworking and soconvincein that you know employees Win't wort from whome. We can't trustthem. Yeah well, you've had two in this case and guess what actually they're doing absolutely what they canin very difficult circumstances, but we mustn't forget that we're notRoebox, so we can't just be like automatically rprogram to work inthis new way. It takes time suppor and it takes you, know, learning from our mistakesand reflection and growth, so without prioritizing a human factor, digitaltransformation and external productivity tools, no matter howsophisticated they are just won't be enough. Leaders need to Leav this andbe employee, focused yeah, and for me talking aboutleadership. When I look at the future, I think successful corporate leaders ofthe feature they need to have strong character trace. I was shocked throughmy career to see people reaching the top jobs with very little CARACTER. Solartetraces, like empathy, integrity, compassion being authentic. I think I tusually perhaps its my strong hope. I...

...really hope it will be a must for thefeature they they have to be more conscious leaders, an employe centric.I mean when I look at my employs. They were not Justifi Miss Managers, theywere fathers, daughters, sons, shull. I look at them as a holistic, humor meingor just finance manageat the title. So they are for me therefore areas thatthe leaders they have to pay a lot of attention and to work really HIRH andI's not easy. I know it's Noeasy, but I think it's a mast it. We need to do itto listen. So, for me, don't make assumptions ifYoure manages orthe writer. Listen to your implaceand the most important question to us is: What do you need and then you staysilent until you get the answer: Don't try to fiel the silences. Second, one is to give so compassion, kindness and understanding. These will go a long way. Therogh one is tosimplify priortized what is most important and as what keep meetisasshort as possible and use very simple messages, not really long in mils. Thatshows you how clever you are and prepare before meetings and reallyreveale. Do we need this meeting on ous and las one is to connect to humanity.Human means we grave connection connet with your evprose, by showing youraufhantic self, showing you the vulnerable, say O my Gords, I'mstruggling at at honges with these bloody covet. You know an my kids andthen you relationship go to a deeper level with your replace because theyseed you that you are there with them and for me you just remember the mostpowerful question is tell me: How can I help you don't make assumptions anyother area alivia there? You can think tha companies can support the employeesyeah. I think there are some kind of practical steps that they cantake, but just before I get to that just something a few things just cameup. Fror me whilse, you were talking, then the way you described the m kind of being more conscious leadershave been very employeecentric and viewing employees in a morholistic way.It really made me think of the work space as being more of a community andnot just u. You know, employer an employee. I is really looking at that.Whole Biger picture of you know were all part of humanitywe're all here to help each other. Yes, we need to make money and pay the bills, but there's more to it than that. There are human relationships there and thereis that need to support each other emotionally as well,as you know, just getting th Tartaly ASE you're, the school person and andthe other thing when you're talking about listen and just asking peoplewhat they need and then staying silent. It just reminded of Nancy Klein and herbook and time to think. So. If you are...

...a leader- and you haven't read thatbook- that's a very, very good book to read about how to Um, promote thinking within your teems andideas, nd and how to speak to people M so yeah. I just wanted to kind of thosethings came up for me. Whilst you were talking, then, and to be honest for me, you know, if you really think about wespend the megolity of our waking. Ours with ELEX fliving with your family in aweek, go in and check it out how many hours you spent with at work and howmany wil ify. So we may Stoto cens that it has to be created in environment, was like you, Secon, family yeah, and for that you need to tread a treat. Then, with respect- and you want to tend to do well and because everybodywins, you know when you are kind and you connet with people, it's good forthegiveand I's good for the receiver e you W Yeahs, it totally makes senseyeah and those there are more tract corruptions, I suppose, are from her sothat Hari perspective that it's you know. Looking at your policies. Lookingat your home working policy, looking at your flexible working policy, flexbleworking policies aren't just for parents, it might just be that forsomeone's n emotional, well being it's better for them to work, a slightlydifferent Shif pattern than than the core hours remote working. What people want to do once this is allovther to people? Are they desperate to go back into the office? Do they wantto a mixture? Do they want to just work from home? You know survey people findout what they want. There are simple things: if you are really, you knowreally want Im to make some cost cutting exercises and and save somemoney, but yo you don't want to affect your employee satisfaction too. Much.Look at simple policies like the expenses policy and the travel policy. No one needs to fly first class TOR meeting that they could have byzoom andno one eesed to be staying in a five star hotel. There are some very simplesavings you can make and then, when you're, looking at your employeebenefits, how can you improve employee satisfaction through your benefits? Itmay not be that you have extra money to throw at them, but what are simplethings you could put in place that would make people feel better. Tinplethings like buy and sell and you'll leave. If you've got some big holidaycoming up and you're going to have to use all your annual eveand one go. Youmight want to buy a few extra days to have a few extra days off here and Tnow, and it's not costing the company anything they're going to pay you forthose days anyway and then, when it comes to well being you know, mostcompanies, I would say, do have an employee assistance program. I would beinterested to know how much I is utilized, particularly the awareness of all the things thatare available through employee...

...assistance program, the sort of healplines they have afinancial assistance or forgetting some extra support at home, a d and thingslike that D, doyour employees really know what's available to then and again, like you, were talking about people being vulnerable, be yourself and bevulnerable in front of your moes. If you're a leader and you've used EAP,talk about it, if you're comfortable tell yo like how good it was nd andwhat you managed to get from it, whether it was counseling or Oh, youknow I was falling behind my mortgage payments and I just needed to speak tosomeone. You know what is it that you could kind of helped out theme and showthat you're, human and also look the company looks after you here. We've gotall these things things there for you and then I'm very aware that there arepeople at the moment who are very worried about their jobs. They mightstill be furlowed, they might have already been made redundant, and I knowthis is a very scary time, so you need to be kind to yourself. Do what youneed to do to get by and pay the bills, but don't forget about your dream? Ifyou have a dream, maybe this is the time to finally go for it, whether thatmeans retraining or doing a bit of a side Hussle. You know getting whateverwork you can to pay the bills, but then starting accompany on the side and justtesting the waters. You know try and take whatever opportunity you can fromyou know if you've been handed a bit of a Shitty card at the moment like you an?U Just do what you can to to improve things for yourself and then to behonest, when you were mentioning all these different options for companieswhen you are in a leadler suposition, it doesn't mean you know at all. If youdon't have a clue how to help the emplays ask as then you ye, what do youneed? How can we help and they will be a mater of okay? These things are tooexpensive. We can't afford it, but this one, an many times to be honest, is isa humn connection. I have leaders at the top that they never walked throughthe floor to say good money a good morning. Fom you manager goes along way or you good morning. So many of the things are so simple to do ifyou're not doing them already and then guess, as you don't need to have allthe answers and you don't need to feel like. Oh my God, what a crop. I don'tknow what to do. Well, we don't know what to do. We ask because it's betternot to seeem and know what they want, so we can really provide for what theymet: Yano, atelone, so yeah so yeah.
